Silk Museum
The Como Silk Museum documents silk production in the area from the end of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. It illustrates the role of the textile industry in the development of the economy and society of the Lombardy area.
Opened to the public in 1990, today the permanent exhibition occupies about 1,800 square metres and displays, alongside restored machinery and tools - mostly donated by companies that have modified or relocated production since the 1960s - a wide range of documents that complete the narrative of the objects with the testimonies of the people who, at all levels, used them.
have used them. In each room, a work cycle is set up and the exhibition itinerary illustrates, also with the use of multimedia installations, the progress of the silk industry at 360° in its scientific, technological and creative aspects: in fact, in the Como area and in the capital of Lake Como, not only were all the fabric manufacturing processes present, but also the production of machines and, in this sense, the permanent exhibition represents a unicum at world level, offering visitors the possibility of getting to know each phase of the production chain in its entirety.
