The Spada perspective

Atlas of Beauty /
Art, Trails
A diabolical perspective. A work of genius by Francesco Borromini, the essence of art as wonder. A small Baroque architectural jewel is located inside Palazzo Spada, a building often overshadowed by the nearby, more famous Palazzo Farnese. It stands in a secluded corner of the palace, near a garden of orange trees that exudes a strong scent of orange blossom. Crossing it, one reaches a threshold from which a corridor of Tuscan columns opens, with a garden and a statue at the end. An astonishing architectural artifice; a small construction of nine metres that seems four times as long. It is what is called accelerated perspective, an artefact that deceives the eye. The walls come closer together, the ceiling and floor converge and the statue at the bottom, a Roman warrior, that seems enormous is only sixty centimetres high. Visit the website
