TBWA creates Jonian Dolphin Conservation's new logo
The Jonian Dolphin Conservation (JDC) is a research centre established in Taranto whose aim is to protect the cetaceans that inhabit the Ionian Sea.
TBWA\Italia joined our Communication Sponsorsin 2022 and immediately set to work alongside Jonian Dolphin Conservation to devise a rebranding project. The end result is not a simple graphic sign, but a real tool that monitors the health of the Mediterranean, and changes according to such.
Given the often reductive perception of the Gulf of Dolphins as an association of excursionists taking tourists to see dolphins, the agency wanted to make the scientific component of the organisation the protagonist of the new communication. The undertaking set by TBWA goes beyond that of redefining the logo, which is required to emphasise the irreversible risks, on which JDC's research focuses, to which the Mediterranean is exposed due to climate change.

Chosen among the 20 national excellences to represent the Region of Puglia at Expo 2015, the Golfo dei Delfini works 200 days a year at sea to preserve the right balance of coexistence between humans and dolphins, whales and sperm whales. Founded and led by Carmelo Fanizza, thanks to the collaboration of biologists, naturalist guides and experienced seafarers, it also makes possible the experience of sailing the Gulf of Taranto to spot cetaceans. In 2013, it won 1st place in the ‘Scientific Research and Technological Innovation’ section of the Sea Heritage Best Communication Campaign Award, an international recognition for all entities that have developed interventions to enhance, promote and disseminate maritime heritage.
TBWA\Italia is part of an international creative collective comprising more than 10,000 people in 41 countries; the agency uses creativity to help companies and projects like JDC challenge the status quo. For the Gulf of Dolphins, it designed the first Brand Identity that is both a Call to Action and a Call to Action, as it transforms according to the health of the Mediterranean. Thanks to the continuous scans of the JDC researchers, the agency designed a logo that constantly changes: a healthy sea makes the logo highly visible, while a polluted sea will slowly make the cetaceans disappear from the graphic sign. In addition, a new claim was developed from the Call to Action:
Jonian Dolphin Conservation. We listen to the sea. Together.
‘This change of image includes a profound change in our organisational structure, and TBWA/Italia has been able to interpret this in the best possible way with a logo that now, more than ever, represents us. In recent years, we have grown a lot, becoming a complex and operational reality in various fields of scientific research and awareness-raising. Our greatest satisfaction is that we have maintained the course set on continuous growth,’ says Carmelo Fanizza, President of Jonian Dolphin Conservation.
