Giardini Hanbury
An Englishman's Mediterranean Eden. The Hanbury botanical gardens stand on the Mortola promontory on the Ligurian coast of Ventimiglia, a few kilometres from the French border. They occupy an area of 18 hectares and were created in 1867 from the botanical passion of Thomas Hanbury, who had become rich in China through the spice and medicinal plant trade. Today they are an extraordinary research and training centre, managed by the service centre of the Genoese university, which also aims to revive the historic 19th century taste for greenery and gardening.
