Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Saronno
‘The Concert of the Musician Angels. Gaudenzio Ferrari began work on the dome of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Saronno in 1535, one of his highest pictorial pages. The fresco celebrates music and paradise, a very ancient combination, dating back to Greek classicism, where goodness was often identified with making music in nature. In this marvellous fresco, angels play all the instruments then available. It is the idea of the transcendence of earthly things through art: music and painting. The path passes from half-light to light, the eyes, at a certain point, cannot help but turn to the dome, circles of angels that in a colourful flurry of shapes and instruments ascend to the crown of golden light at the centre of which is the eternal father.
