The Eco-museum of Pastoralism
The Eco-museum of Shepherding, located in the alpine village of Pontebernardo in the Upper Stura Valley, was officially established in 2000 as a participatory process of recognition, care and management of the local cultural heritage, with the aim of fostering sustainable social, environmental and economic development. The ecomuseum's exhibition ‘Na draio per vioure - A path for living’ - which recounts the commitment to safeguarding and recovering the native Sambucana sheep breed, which was in danger of disappearing in the 1980s, as well as the history of sheep farming in the Stura Valley, the practice of transhumance and the culture linked to the rural and mountain world - is merely the starting point for a broader reflection. It reflects on increasingly urgent and topical issues as environmental sustainability, the re-inhabitation of high and marginal lands in a conscious way, care of the landscape, the need to imagine and give concreteness to a future that is more balanced, more respectful of nature and quality of life.
