The Holy Well of St Christine

The Nuragic sanctuary of Santa Cristina is an archaeological area located in the municipality of Paulilatino, in the province of Oristano. A sacred staircase (25 steps) or an observatory to watch lunar cycles and predict eclipses: there are many hypotheses and interpretations of this mysterious structure in the heart of Nuragic Sardinia in the Oristano plain. A place of balanced proportions and superb workmanship in its geometric composition, as Giovanni Lilliu, the doyen of Sardinian archaeologists, writes. Dating back 1000 years before our era, its Christian name is linked to the nearby small church dedicated to Santa Cristina who, according to legend, suffered her martyrdom in the well. In the park, you can also visit a village that has known different phases in its life but has existed since 1500 BC.
