The Riace Bronzes
The Hoplite and the Warrior King. The modern story of the two great bronzes, a Hoplite (the young one) and a warrior king (the old one), begins on 16 August 1972, when they were found in Forticchio near Riace Marina, three hundred metres off the coast, eight metres deep, by an amateur diver. As if to prove that the lands and seas of our country are still rich in priceless treasures. The emotion one feels at the sight of them speaks to beauty’s ability to strike the hearts of scholars and ordinary visitors alike. They are housed, after restoration, in Palazzo Piacentini in Reggio Calabria in the Museo della Magna Grecia.
