The Salt Pans of Margherita di Savoia

Santa Margeritadi Savoia salina
Mountains of salt by the sea. The Saline di Margherita di Savoia nature reserve is a protected natural area in Apulia established in 1977, covering an area of 3,871 hectares, almost twenty kilometres, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. Located in the lower Tavoliere at the foot of the Gargano, it is Europe's largest salt mine in operation. The saltpan can be visited with guided tours. In summer, a small train runs through it, but there are also visits with your own vehicle, trekking and bike tours. The salt pans are an impressive natural environment with their 20,000 species of animals, including birds and fish, and hundreds of types of plants. At certain times of the year (September/October, February/March), some species (ducks, coots, flamingos) concentrate in their thousands, putting on a show of wings and flight. Visit the site
