The Shrine of the Nativity of Mary
The largest fresco in the world. It is a great shrine, of art and faith, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, of great interest because of its frescoes. At the centre of the dome, under the waving canopy triumphs the radiant glory of Mary amidst the joy of the cheering and musician angels, while from the heavenly light of the cupola, the Trinity reaches out to receive the soul and body of the Virgin. A six-thousand-square-metre fresco, a masterpiece of Baroque art, worked on by Sebastiano Galeotti from Tuscany, Giuseppe Galli Bibiena from Bologna, Mattia Bortoloni from Rovigo and Felice Biella from Milan, painters who were not of the highest renown but who achieved a collective effect of great impact, able to give unity to the different phases of construction. Today, using a helmet and harness, one climbs the great dome and next to the monastery there is a reception facility, in the former Cistercian monastery, the Casa Regina Montis Regalis.
