Preserving and educating on beauty

In Italy, full of history, genius and memory, conservation is a necessary art.

Istituto Centrale per la Grafica
Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo, are found behind the Trevi Fountain
Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Morandi and Burri. These are just some of the names whose works are kept in the Central Institute for Graphics. A place capable of showcasing prints from the last five centuries. The Central Institute for Graphics is a museum, a research centre, an archive, as well as an exhibition and conservation space. Although an institution of authoritative prestige, it is certainly less well known to the general public than the famous Trevi Fountain, which merges with the palaces, Palazzo della Calcografie and Palazzo Poli, which house the Institute.

The Istituto Centrale per la Grafica represents the largest collection of drawings and engravings in Italy. The institute carries out conservation and research activities and is of global significance due to the importance of the works it preserves.
Carrara Marble Museum and the Fossacava Archeological Site
The marble of Carrara, a source of Italian pride worldwide
Μαρμαίρω(marmairo): the stone that shines. The marble of Carrara, known in Roman times as the ‘Marble of Luni’ and quarried even earlier by the Etruscans, is today a worldwide source of Italian pride. The marble from these quarries has produced such beauties as Michelangelo's ‘La Pietà’ and the ‘Colonna Traiana’. This precious rock was also used in the construction of the Taj Mahal and the Twin Towers. The Marble Museum and the Fossacava Archaeological Area give visitors access to the world's largest marble library and a Roman quarry from the 1st century BC. A journey through time to discover the rock and the workmanship that has permeated this area and the people who have lived here for millennia.

The Marble Museum and the Fossacava Area is a unique space, where you can see the excavation methods of the ancient Romans, open to the public from 2019.

The Biblioteca Capitolare
The oldest library in the world still in operation
Founded in the 5th century, with its 1,500 years of history and 70,000 preserved volumes, the Biblioteca Capitolare is a place filled with history. Its shelves contain texts on theology, law, poetry, philosophy, astronomy, medicine, botany, history and numerous other sciences. The exhibition spaces and cloister were once frequented by intellectuals such as Dante Alighieri and Francesco Petrarca.

The Capitolare, as part of the Foundation's 2023 call for entries, won the EssilorLuxottica special prize in the ‘Eyes on Art’ programme. Thanks to the prize, the library and its precious manuscripts were broadcast on EssilorLuxottica big screens in Milan and New York. The Capitolare comes to life and tells its story, through new looks, around the world.

Rondine City for Peace
A small Tuscan village has been working for the reduction of armed conflicts in the world for over 20 years
Located in the heart of the Ponte Buriano nature reserve, once a walled stronghold for shelter from the enemy, the medieval Tuscan village Rondine is now an open place, a space for the creative transformation of conflict and the development of ideas and projects. This is the Rondine Cittadella della Pace association. For over twenty years, the association has been committed to the reduction of armed conflicts in the world and the dissemination of its methodology aimed at the creative transformation of conflict, in every context.

The association Rondine Cittadella della Pace has been working in the field of armed conflict prevention for more than 30 years. Starting from the awareness that conflict is part of everyday life, Rondine uses a training method that capitalises on the creative transformation of conflict.

Associazione Fedora
The Milanese association that pays special attention to sensory disabilities
Fedora is an association founded in 2018 in Milan that promotes accessibility in the cultural sphere, with special attention to people with sensory disabilities. The association aims to generate the preconditions for a more accessible cultural life for all and everyone, and to educate society on a new approach to disability and accessibility, also paying special attention to children.

Among the projects proposed by Fedora, Lucciole intends to bring children in fragile situations - with a focus on children with disabilities - closer to the places of culture, through guided tours and workshops. The routes will also be enhanced by the possibility of using experience amplification tools designed in collaboration with MUBA - Museo dei Bambini di Milano.

Lilliput: small steps into museums
Linking museums, families and associations to rethink museum spaces
Lilliput's mission is to network museums, families and associations in order to rethink museum spaces from a family-friendly point of view and to start a process of involvement that will bring more and more families with children to experience museums, discovering their heritage and beauty and spending fun moments with the whole family. The philosophy and pedagogical approach underlying Lilliput start from the idea of the museum as a relational place, emphasising its social function.

Lilliput has been working for several years to make museums welcoming spaces for the whole family. The project accompanies these areas in a process aimed at reaching more and more children.
