The Casale dei Cedrati - a Green Cultural District
In the heart of Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome, the Casale dei Cedrati has once again become a space open to the city after years of closure and neglect. Today it houses a bookstore with a reading room, a café, exhibitions, gatherings, presentations, music, and cultural activities, giving the community back a space that combines the site’s history with a new vision of social interaction. Surrounding the Casale is the historic Giardino dei Cedrati, where the restoration of the natural heritage is intertwined with initiatives focused on healing, education, and inclusion.
The Casale’s rebirth stems from a network of citizens, associations, cooperatives, and institutions that have chosen to collaborate to build a model of community-based culture. From this experience, the Green Cultural District has taken shape—a network that connects local cultural and social organizations with the goal of experimenting with a different way of experiencing urban spaces: one that is closer to communities, more sustainable, and capable of generating new opportunities.
The Casale thus becomes much more than a cultural space. It is a vibrant hub of participation, where artistic programming intersects with green space stewardship, the circular economy, education, and workplace inclusion. Events and activities also engage young talents and local organizations, while the Giardino dei Cedrati serves as a testing ground for practices related to sustainability and the enhancement of natural heritage.
Its story illustrates a concrete possibility: restoring beauty does not merely mean renovating a place, but reconnecting it with people. It is through this network of expertise, energy, and participation that the Casale dei Cedrati aspires to become a model of sustainable and widespread culture, capable of contributing to the creation of a more inclusive, multicentric city that is mindful of its own spaces.
