The Staglieno Monumental Cemetery
An open-air museum blending art, history, and nature. The Staglieno Monumental Cemetery, inaugurated in 1851 in Genoa, is one of Europe’s most important monumental complexes. Designed by Carlo Barabino and completed by Giovanni Battista Resasco, it houses an extraordinary collection of sculptures, chapels, and funerary architecture that chronicle the city’s artistic, social, and cultural evolution from the 19th to the 20th century. From Neoclassicism to Realism, from Symbolism to Art Nouveau, the works of artists and artisans intertwine with monumental porticoes, avenues, and paths surrounded by greenery, creating a landscape where art and nature engage in a dialogue with individual and collective memory. Through guided tours, themed itineraries, and educational initiatives, the City of Genoa promotes awareness and appreciation of this heritage, transforming a visit into an opportunity to rediscover the city’s history and the cultural value of its places of remembrance.
