WWF Nature Reserve: Cratere degli Astroni
The WWF Cratere degli Astroni Nature Reserve is a protected natural area managed by the WWF Italy Foundation, located within an ancient volcanic crater in the Campi Flegrei. An oasis of extraordinary natural, geological, and scenic value, it preserves a rich heritage of biodiversity and serves as an important site for research, environmental education, and conservation, offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of the most significant ecosystems in Campania’s volcanic region.
The Reserve promotes conservation efforts, scientific outreach, and educational activities aimed at schools, families, and the general public, fostering an informed appreciation of the natural heritage and landscape. Through guided tours, educational programs, and cultural initiatives, the Oasis helps spread awareness of the geological and environmental characteristics of the Campi Flegrei, strengthening the bond between natural heritage, the community, and the local area.
Among the most recent enhancement projects is the creation of a multimedia museum exhibition dedicated to the geological history and volcanic activity of Campania. Designed as an accessible and interactive space, the new center enriches the visitor experience and consolidates the Oasis’s role as a hub for scientific outreach, environmental education, and the promotion of the region’s cultural and natural heritage.
