San Francesco del Deserto
Peace in the lagoon. An island with more than a thousand trees, among pines and cypresses, shrouded in the magical silence of the lagoon, a precious ecosystem that gives shelter to numerous resident and migratory birds, and on the island, where, according to legend, St Francis stopped over on his way back from Egypt, the monastery. In 1233, after the canonisation of Francis, Jacopo Michiel, a Venetian nobleman, donated the island to the Friars Minor, who, having been removed by Napoleon, returned there in 1856. The monastery provides 15 cells and two large rooms for study groups and a simple, but careful, kitchen with produce from the garden.
