Santa Caterina di Alessandria

Story, Trails
Santa Caterina di Alessandra is an imposing building on the edge of Galatina's historical centre, one of the most distinguished late Gothic monuments in the Puglia region. The façade is thoroughly Romanesque while the presbytery is built on an octagonal base with seven large splay windows. Inside is a precious cycle of frescoes from the 15th century on which masters of the Giottesque and Sienese schools worked. For the vastness of the pictorial cycles, the church is second only to the basilica of St Francis of Assisi. Next to the basilica is a large monastery built in the second half of the 17th century.
