The ancient costume
One of the most curious images of ancient art is a mosaic decoration found in the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, dating back to the 4th century AD and containing 3500 square metres of mosaics. The villa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Among the mosaics one can see young women exercising wearing what looks like a modern bikini. What makes the image unusual is that this type of women's two-piece garment, which today is mainly used as a swimming costume and resembles women's underwear, only became popular in the 20th century thanks to the French tailor Louis Réard.
