The baptistery of Calascio
A monument of light. Santa Maria della Pietà rises in its solitary beauty and octagonal geometry in the Gran Sasso Park not far from the imposing remains of the Norman fortress built by Ruggero d'Altavilla and stands out in an imposing landscape, parched in summer and misty in winter, facing the Maiella massif. It is a gesture of devotion by the Piccolomini family, who ruled the area, and was built in 1451 to thank the population for defeating a band of brigands.
A few years ago, in order to give hope back to these places, now inhabited by only eighty people, the Baldi brothers, who arrived in these extreme lands from L'Aquila, set up a Community Cooperative in 2020. The Cooperative is called ‘Vivi Calascio’ and its aim is to innovate for travellers and the idea is to create work in the small villages and curb depopulation.
