The Carthusian Monastery of Calci

Atlas of Beauty /
ArtStory, Trails
Founded in 1366 at the behest of the archbishop of Pisa, in the green Val Graziosa, the Certosa di calci was a consortium of nobles. There were 14 monks and a new one could not be counted until the death of an old one. Today it is an enormous complex, rich in Carrara marble and precious furnishings. It preserves the Atlantic Bible, an extraordinary illuminated codex from the 12th century. Over the centuries, it has always been a place of spiritual retreat for the Tuscan nobility. It is also home to the natural museum of the University of Pisa, founded in the 16th century and boasting fossil collections that are among the oldest in the world.
