The Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola
The Palazzo Farnese is a magical piece of architecture in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It was built by Vignola (Jacopo Barozzi) for the Farnese princes, a tangible sign of the family's power and at the same time a fortress, a palace and a villa. It has a magnificent circular courtyard that organises the entire architecture of the palace, a helicoidal staircase (the royal staircase) that revolves around thirty double columns and opens up at each step to strikingly designed perspectives. The palace has a spectacular painted surface (frescoes, grotesques and stuccoes) by Taddeo and Federico Zuccari, Antonio Tempesta and Raffaellino da Reggio. It also has a room dedicated to 'solitude' located between Cardinal Alessandro Farnese's dressing room and the Torrione, the room is frescoed with episodes from the lives of saints and philosophers who made meditation their life choice.
