The Mazara Satyr
The Dancing Satyr is a bronze statue, an original product of Greek art from the classical or Hellenistic period, the face has two white eyes planted on a wild head, it is a chilling statue. The sculpture (2.5 metres high) represents a Silenus, but by common opinion it is now said to represent a satyr, a mythological being that was part of the procession of Dionysus. The statue was placed in the Mazara museum after careful restoration work. It was found at a depth of 500 metres in 1998 by a fishing boat trawling the fishy sea. It is probably the remains of a stormy shipwreck in ancient times. It is said to date back to the 4th century B.C. and to be the product of the great school of Praxiteles; Salvatore Settis, on the other hand, favours the thesis of a Roman copy, but of course in this case the interpretations overlap and change. What matters is that once again our sea has returned an exciting treasure. Visit the site
