The reggia di Caserta
A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, the Caserta Palace is the royal palace of the Bourbons. The construction work was initiated by Charles of Bourbon, who entrusted it to Luigi Vanvitelli. It is an impressive building due to the vastness of its rooms (47,000 square metres), the majesty of its staircases and the magnificence of its halls: it boasts 1,200 rooms all with valuable frescoes on the ceilings, inlaid marble and gold-leaf decorations and has a court theatre that reproduces in a small scale the splendour of the San Carlo. The splendour of the palace also continues in the gardens: 73 hectares of woodland and 23 of garden, a large landscaped park with sumptuous water features and sculptures, supplied by the Carolino aqueduct.
