The Temple of Valadier
The Temple in the Rock. It is located in Genga, in the Marche region, and is accessed via a paved path on a steep slope. It is set in a rocky hollow, a position that gives it an almost secret aspect and an extraordinary light. It was built by the architect after whom it is named (Giuseppe Valadier) and commissioned by Pope Leo XII, a native of Genga. The neoclassical temple is octagonal in shape, as temples and baptisteries often had eight sides to commemorate the days of Christ's resurrection. Inside, on the altar, there is a copy of a statue of the Madonna and Child in white Carrara marble attributed to the school of Antonio Canova.
