Centrale Montemartini
Gods and Machines. The monumental spaces of a large thermoelectric power station in the Ostiense district, decommissioned and then reborn as the home of part of the Capitoline Museums' artistic heritage. An astonishing and unique environment where the pillars and iron beams, Art Nouveau architecture and large remaining turbines dialogue with a vast collection of Roman statuary and mosaics, some of the works brought to light during excavations carried out in Rome between the end of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. Thus, the colossal acrolith depicting the goddess Fortuna and the pensive figure of the muse Polyhymnia seem to speak to the switchboards and large machines of the past, and it seems as if the mythical figures of antiquity are exalted by their encounter with one of the first industrial environments.
