Festival a Veglia – Teatro del Baratto
In the heart of the Maremma, for nearly twenty years the Festival a Veglia – Teatro del Baratto has been bringing theater and the performing arts to small venues throughout the region, reviving the ancient tradition of the farmers’ vigil: a time when rural communities would gather to spend time together, talk, and share stories. Born from an idea by actress and artistic director Elena Guerrini, the festival transforms this tradition into a contemporary cultural experience.
Theater, music, gatherings, and opportunities for dialogue come to life in picturesque settings throughout the Maremma, fostering a direct connection between artists, the audience, and the local area. But what makes the Festival a Veglia particularly unique is its barter system: to participate, you don’t pay with money—instead, you bring something to share, such as local produce—rediscovering the value of giving and reciprocity.
The festival thus becomes much more than a theater festival: it is an opportunity to come together, share, and build relationships, rediscovering through culture an ancient and authentic way of being together. A celebration of theater and community, deeply rooted in the Maremma and its identity.
