Wax fruits in Turin: the eternal beauty of the ephemeral

The Museo della Frutta is located in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Turin. In the mid 19th century, Francesco Garnier Valletti, scientist and craftsman, invented an ingenious system to reproduce any kind of fruit: a mixture of alabaster, wax and rubber. A mould in a moist ash box, which then obtains unalterable and perfect copies.
In this way he gives eternity to the fragile beauty of the ephemeral. The mighty collection contains more than a thousand different species. The renewed interest in botany and horticulture has turned it into a place of affection, loved by a varied public and also popular with young people.
