Mamoiada: the carnival and the mask museum
Our Halloween. The mask as a form of approaching mystery and disorientation of the subject is a universal and ancestral form. It is the object that lies at the centre of the small museum in Mamoiada that, with a sequence of images, texts, music and sounds, accompanies the visitor in the discovery of the most ancient traditions of the town and its carnival. A way of recounting the origins and significance of the Mamuthones and Issohadores, and the numerous theories that have attempted to reconstruct their origins over time. Theories are linked to the ancient relationship with animals and their capture. For more than twenty years, Mamoiada has collectively decided to abandon a tradition of poverty and brigandage and entrust its identity and rebirth to the mask. Today, the Mamuthones mask is an element of attraction for international tourism and a production that is growing in quality in the areas of wood craftsmanship and wine-making.
