Mozia and the Marsala Pond

Outpost of the Phoenicians. Mozia is an ancient Punic settlement on the island that in Norman times was called San Pantaleo, in the Stagnone of Marsala. A handkerchief of land in the lagoon. It is a historical site of extraordinary importance for our country, gathered around shallow and fishy waters, an area of spectacular salt marshes. Archaeological excavations in the 20th century, conducted by the Englishman Giuseppe Whitaker, revealed a beautiful Phoenician wall, thousands of artefacts and a Greek statue (The Ephebe of Mozia) discovered under a mound of clay in 1979, and which has become the great protagonist of the small museum. Everything is immersed in a landscape of southern light, salt pans that change colour as the deposits change, and ancient mills. The Ettore Infersa salt pans, which still harvest the precious material using traditional methods, stand on the Sicilian shore with their iconic windmill, can be traversed (the salt tourism) or watched from the Mamma Caura, a bar near the landing stage, with a glass of wine in hand in their dazzling colours at sunset time.
