Monumenti Aperti started in Cagliari in 1997 thanks to local associations, with the support of various institutions. Conceived to be a stimulus for the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage as an opportunity for a joint commitment between schools, associations, organisations and institutions, the event was rewarded from the very first edition by an impressive popular participation. The concept entails that the municipalities participating in the network, particularly those that are normally closed or difficult to access, will be open and illustrated to the public thanks to free guided tours conducted by school students and volunteers. In the regions involved, the calendar of events takes place on several weekends between April and June and between October and December, proving to be a useful tourist attraction in the periods before/after high season.
