Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo
An extraordinary complex also known as the Royal Palace, today the headquarters of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, is the oldest royal residence in Europe. The first part which was built dates back to the Arab domination in the 9th century. We owe the construction of the magnificent Palatine Chapel to Roger II, which is dedicated to Peter and Paul and was consecrated in 1140. Inside, there are rooms and decorations originating from different styles and epochs: a Pompeian room decorated in 1830 by Giuseppe Patania, a Chinese room with paintings by the Patricola brothers, following a fashion prevailing in European courts in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a room of the winds located in an ancient medieval tower, known as Joharia, covered by an 18th-century wooden ceiling at the centre of which is a wind rose. The Palace has been a Unesco site since 2015, honouring the city's Arab-Norman routes.
