Palazzo Ducale in Urbino

Atlas of Beauty /
ArtEvent, Story
The Renaissance palace of Federico da Montefeltro, built by Luciano Laurana between 1466 and 1472, is the centrepiece of a scenography of streets, churches and palaces, closely interconnected. The Ducal Palace, with its two sharp towers almost sixty metres high, is an entirely original structure in the architectural landscape of the time. Under the enlightened protection of the Montefeltro family, Piero della Francesca and Francesco di Giorgio Martini worked here, and Raphael and Mantegna developed their first artistic experiences. Today, the palace is home to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte delle Marche and the city centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
