Poggio del Molino: Shared Archaeology
Archaeology for all. The Archaeological Park of Poggio del Molino occupies a vast plateau overlooking the Baratti Park and opening towards Populonia. In this marvellous landscape stood the villa-farm of Caius Cecina Largo with a craft sector used for the production of ‘garum’, the Roman fish-based sauce. The villa today is the subject of excavations. It is a unique place in Italy that is run by private individuals, teaching the craft of archaeology to Italians and foreigners alike, a place that entertains schools and welcomes volunteers, a private enterprise in its own right that passionately performs a public service. In ten years, some 200 volunteers and students have participated in the project, creating a small virtuous economy around the site. Visit the site.
