Sardinia's green train

The Trenino Verde (Green Train) of Sardinia is a unique experience that takes you on a journey through time, an adventure that has lasted for over 130 years. Its essence is encapsulated in its name. The railway on which it travels is narrow-gauge, meaning that the rails are spaced less than ordinary rails and the train is also smaller in size, hence the name “Trenino". On the other hand, it is called the Green Train because it runs through wild landscapes, where the green of the forests envelops the train as it travels. The Trenino, according to different compositions and from different eras, runs along lines designed and built between the late 19th and early 20th century, passing through real works of railway engineering, such as bridges and tunnels between mountains, to reach small villages and territories characterised by extraordinary landscapes and natural environments, scents and flavours that have disappeared elsewhere. The tourist railway network is the longest in Europe, no less than 438 km of tracks that make it possible to explore hidden corners of Sardinia otherwise impossible to reach. Each itinerary offers an experience of slowness and authenticity, each with its own peculiarities. The journeys are supplemented with boat trips to the lakes, biking, trekking and other forms of active tourism that can be undertaken at the locations encountered along the way. The route from Mandas to Laconi in 1921 had the good fortune to have among its passengers the famous English writer David Herbert Lawrence who, together with his wife, set off from Mandas for Sorgono after having left the day before from Cagliari. After that journey he wrote ‘Sea and Sardinia’ in which he recounted his journey and the emotions he experienced during the experience, which can also be experienced by today's traveller.
