The Malatesta library

Atlas of Beauty /
Reading, Institution
The ancient art of reading. The library was built in the refectory of the Franciscan friary. The idea of building a studium annexed to the convent had already matured in the community of friars, as it required larger and more adequate space for the study and placement of texts. Novello Malatesta took charge of the conventuals' need; it was the year 1450. In the large structure, the manuscripts are stored flat on plutei tied with a wrought-iron chain to prevent them from being moved or stolen. The value of a manuscript in those days was equivalent to the cost of a house and required the work of many people. The Malatestiana is the only example of a humanist convent library from the Renaissance period that is perfectly preserved in its building, furnishings and library equipment. For this reason, Unesco has included it, first in Italy, in the Memory of the World Register. Visit the website
