The Santa Rosalia Celebration

Atlas of Beauty /
MemoryEventStory, Material Culture
One of the largest and most passionate religious celebrations in Italy, it takes place on the evening of 14-15 July to celebrate the memory of the end of the plague in 1624, the same as in The Betrothed. It was the discovery of the saint's bones that saved the city: a large procession celebrates this occurence amidst music and songs; the statue of the saint is hoisted (since 1771) on a ship-shaped float surrounded by roses and lilies and passes under arches of coloured bulbs, large luminous arabesques, amidst wings of crowds. On its return to the cathedral, a fireworks display explodes. The float and the statue are the subject of enormous devotion every year, but also of artistic and craft inventions by art and trade schools with the participation of great international artists. The float also paraded in New York for Columbus Day in 2004. Visit the site
