The Scalone dei Morti is reached from the entrance level by a wide, steep staircase, the construction of which seems to date back to the mid 12th century. The staircase stands in the heart of the Sacra di San Michele and leads to the door of the Zodiac, built around 1130 by Maestro Niccolò; it represents one of the most important realisations on zodiacal themes in the medieval sphere. There are 243 steps a way up accompanied by the niches that once contained the bodies of deceased monks. Taken as a whole, the Sacra is one of the most fascinating monuments in our country. It is an architectural complex perched on the summit of Mount Pirchiarino and originally founded around the year 1000 as a hermitage by Saint John Vincent. Expanded over the following centuries, it is now run by the Rosminian Fathers. It is an imposing structure that evokes beauty and mystery in all weathers, such as to inspire Umberto Eco. Many consider it the inspiration for the abbey in 'The Name of the Rose.
