The woman with the pen

Atlas of Beauty /
MemoryArtEvent, Story
It is a mysterious and ancient image, legend has it that it is the image of the poetess Sappho. The author of the fresco is anonymous. It is the portrait of a young woman with wax tablets and stylus, it comes from the excavations of Pompeii and was found there, in the insula occidentalis, in 1760 and is one of the incredible treasures that the site continues to unveil. Today it is in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The pensive and absorbed air, the writing instrument brought to the mouth as if to ratify its silence, make this face a symbolic image of female thinking in past centuries when, as Rebecca Solnit says: men were everything and women were nobody.
