Villa Doria: the prince's palace

Andrea Doria's palace in Fassolo is one of the most sumptuous residences in Genoa, built in the 16th century in an area that, at the time of its construction, was outside the city walls with a rapid descent to the port. Here the ships of the most powerful man of that century were moored: Andrea Doria, the admiral of Charles V, the man who controlled the Mediterranean on behalf of the Spanish sovereign. The palace of Fassolo, rebuilt by Andrea in 1521, with the contribution of Perin del Vaga, was the centre of this immense power. In the palace, in the Hall of Giants, Charles V's throne was placed, during his stay in the city in March 1533. Next to the splendid fireplace in black stone and white marble is a curious painting: it is a portrait of Andrea Doria as an old man, facing a cat, attributed to the Flemish painter William Key. The prince and the cat stand on the same level in a relationship of mutual understanding as if telling each other the things of life.
