Villa Panza in Biumo
In Varese, on the hill of Biumo, an 18th-century villa overlooks the city from above and houses a symbolic encounter between history and the contemporary world. It is Villa Panza, a historic residence transformed by collector Giuseppe Panza di Biumo into a home dedicated to contemporary art. Within its rooms, in the former stables, and in the large Italian-style park, the artworks interact with the architecture, light, and landscape, creating an experience in which every space becomes part of the artistic journey.
Beginning in the 1950s, Giuseppe Panza built one of the most important collections of postwar American art, with a particular focus on explorations of light, color, space, and perception. Artists such as Dan Flavin, James Turrell, and Robert Irwin found in the Villa a place to experiment and engage with the mansion’s interiors and the surrounding nature. Even today, the works are not simply on display; rather, they seem to belong to the spaces that house them, altering the way visitors move through and view them.
In 1996, Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza donated the Villa to the FAI—Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund), which has opened it to the public since 2000. Over time, the collection has been enriched with new works and temporary exhibitions, keeping alive the dialogue between the historic collection and contemporary artists. The park, too, with its three hectares overlooking the city, is part of this narrative: a landscape to be explored alongside the artworks, where art and nature come together and invite visitors to slow down and take in the view.
