The Villa Pisani di Stra
It is the grandest of the villas on the Brenta Riviera and the most royal of the Venetian villas. Its construction was commissioned in the mid 18th century by the noble family of Doge Alvise Pisani and can be considered the last shout of an extraordinary economic and social history, the ability of the Serenissima to organise a marvellous 'survival' of its history after the loss, due to the Turks and oceanic exploits, of its dominance over the seas. The Villa Pisani was owned by Napoleon Bonaparte and later by the Habsburgs of Austria. It has a Baroque façade, with a central temple-like structure and a large water canal in front, which flows into a swimming pool. Its garden has a labyrinth of box hedges several kilometres long with a turret in the centre surmounted by the goddess Minerva. It contains 114 sumptuous rooms and its visit includes with grand ballroom frescoed by Giambattista Tiepolo.
