Ilaria del Carretto
Ilaria del Carretto inspires great stillness. It is a sculptural work by Jacopo della Quercia in the sacristy of the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca. It was commissioned by Paolo Guinigi after the death of his second wife, and it is perhaps her tranquil face or the small dog curled up at her feet that give this impression of serenity to the many visitors who walk around her. The work innovates the monumental sculpture of this type by rendering the woman to her essence, her clothes, the cushions on which she rests her head, from the hairstyle from which a curl escapes to the sumptuous folds of her robes: Jacopo della Quercia, albeit in death, humanises her.
