iMorticelli
In the historic center of Salerno, iMorticelli is a former religious site that has been transformed into a hub for culture, community gatherings, and neighborhood life. The former 16th-century church, which had remained closed and abandoned for about forty years, was restored and reopened in 2018, once again becoming a space accessible to and enjoyed by the community.
Today, iMorticelli houses a neighborhood community center, an independent bookstore, and a community café, along with a program of cultural activities, gatherings, and initiatives developed in collaboration with local residents. The space thus creates a dialogue between the building’s history and new forms of participation, fostering a daily environment where culture and social interaction converge.
Its identity stems from the desire to restore a historic landmark to the city by transforming it into an open, shared space. The planning of activities involves the community and fosters collaboration among individuals, associations, and local organizations, with a particular focus on inclusion and accessibility.
iMorticelli is now an example of how a forgotten place can once again become part of city life: an ancient church that has changed its function without losing its history, becoming a home for culture and community in the heart of Salerno.
