La Porta della Bellezza - The Gate of Beauty
In Librino, a suburb of Catania, a long concrete wall has been transformed into one of the largest open-air contemporary art installations: La Porta della Bellezza (The Gate of Beauty). An imposing bas-relief approximately 500 meters long and 8 meters high, made of terracotta and embellished with verses engraved in the clay, it has marked the entrance to the neighborhood since 2009, transforming an element of the urban landscape into a place of art and poetry.
Its history is inextricably linked to that of the Librino community. Between 2006 and 2008, artists and poets worked alongside approximately 2,000 students from nine schools in the neighborhood, transforming the schools into true art workshops and involving children and teenagers in the creation of the work. Each young participant was able to leave their mark on the large collective composition, forging a personal connection with that wall and with the place it represents.
Dedicated to the “Great Mothers,” La Porta della Bellezza has, over time, become much more than a monumental work of art: it is a symbol of identity and participation, born from the belief that beauty can help transform a neighborhood and the way a community experiences it. In Librino, art thus becomes a tool for self-recognition, for caring for one’s own space, and for transforming a place to live into a home one can truly call one’s own.
