La Santa Tavola

In Puglia, even food can become a form of prayer. Bread, pastries, fruits, and other foods associated with religious festivals reflect a rich heritage of traditions and beliefs in which devotion is intertwined with daily life, the cycle of the seasons, and rural culture. It is from this world that La Santa Tavola was born—a collection of ceramic reproductions of Apulian ritual foods, the result of a decade-long ethnological research project.

The project took shape through the collaboration between cultural anthropologist Francesca Casaluci’s research and the work of master ceramist Agostino Branca, who transformed into ceramics foods that, by their very nature, are meant to be consumed, offered, or placed on the altar during celebrations. The reproductions thus become a sort of material archive: they allow us to observe the shapes, colors, and symbolism of a tradition that would otherwise risk disappearing along with the contexts in which it originated.

Through these ceramics, La Santa Tavola tells the story of a Puglia where the sacred is also expressed through the table and where food becomes collective memory. Behind each dish lie stories of communities, local devotions, rituals, and knowledge passed down through the ages: an intangible heritage that finds in the medium of ceramics a new way to be preserved and rediscovered.
