The Sulfur Mines of Cabernardi

Nestled among the hills of the Marche hinterland, Cabernardi preserves the memory of one of Italy’s most important mining operations. For nearly a century, sulfur mining profoundly transformed this small town near Sassoferrato, attracting workers from near and far and giving rise to a community closely tied to the mine. What remains today is a landscape where industrial history, the memory of labor, and daily life continue to intertwine.

The Cabernardi Archaeological Mining Park offers a chance to explore this past in the open air: the Donegani shaft, the Gill furnaces, the lime kilns, the power plant, and the inclined plane illustrate the various stages of sulfur processing and bring to life a world that for decades shaped the economy and identity of the region. The area, restored and renaturalized after the mine’s closure, now preserves traces of the old industrial settlement nestled within the landscape of the Marche hills.

Rounding out the tour is the Municipal Sulfur Mine Museum, where tools, photographs, documents, and minerals tell the story not only of the work underground but also of the lives of the people who built their community around the mine. It is a story of hard work and transformation, but also of belonging: the story of a place that has managed to preserve its memory and make it accessible to today’s generations.
