MASE – Antoine De Saint-Exupéry Museum
Inside the marine reserve of Capo Caccia/Isola Piana there is a small museum, MASE - Museo Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, which traces the life of the author of The Little Prince and his stay in the Alghero area. Antoine De Saint-Exupéry lived in Alghero from May 1944 until July of the same year in the Bay of Porto Conte, in a villa set on a slight rise in front of the Torre Nuova, a building dating back to 1572 that has now been renovated.
Saint-Exupéry flew for the American Allied Air Force stationed at the Fertilia military base. Writing books and flying planes were the two most important things in his life. The rest, he said, is like everything: like civilisation, a fragile gilding that a volcano is enough to erase. In July of that year he moved to Corsica in Borgo and from there took off on his last mission, which saw him wrecked in the sea off Marseilles shot down by a German fighter.
