Ninfa's garden
A large romantic garden. The Garden of Ninfa covers an area of 8 hectares, with 1300 species of plants, including 19 varieties of magnolias, and is a splendid English garden with a romantic appearance. The story of its recovery begins with Gelasio Caetani and his sister Ada who, in 1921, decided to realise their dream: to transform the deserted ruins of Ninfa into a lush garden. Its name derives from a small temple from Roman times dedicated to the Naiad Nymphs that stands on a small island in the small lake. The garden is still criss-crossed by many streams and the river Ninfa, and stands on the remains of an ancient medieval town that was sacked and destroyed in ancient times, which have been incorporated into the garden. The entire Caetani family has applied itself over time to producing this little masterpiece of botany and architecture, most passionately worked on it in the 1930s by Marguerite Chapin and her daughter Leila. In May, at the height of its flowering, the garden is revealed in all its blaze of colour. It was the New York Times that crowned it "the most beautiful and romantic garden in the world".
