Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs
These are the twenty-eight steps that connect Rome to Jerusalem. The holy staircase has returned to its original beauty after careful restoration. It has always been one of the most sacred places of Christian devotion. According to an ancient tradition, it was transported from Jerusalem in 326 at the behest of Constantine's mother; it is the steps that Christ climbed several times to undergo the judgement of Pontius Pilate. It stands in the middle of four flights of stairs surrounded by magnificently frescoed walls. It was Pope Sixtus V who had it moved to the present building adjacent to the Basilica of St John Lateran in 1589. On Good Friday some walk on it on their knees, as Giusi Merli 'the seer saint' does in one of the most moving scenes in The Great Beauty, the film by Paolo Sorrentino.
