The Cerveteri necropolis
A walk among the ancient Etruscans. Cerveteri, the Banditaccia necropolis (a Unesco site since 2004),is one of the most fascinating, moving, stunning, human places, so special that it looks like a tv set.
One walks in the moss and shadows among the tombs of the middle and lower classes, of the good men and the poor christs, of the people and the families, of that city - Caere - which in its heyday had twenty-five thousand inhabitants (as opposed to forty thousand in Athens). In short, a metropolis. A marvellous sixteen-kilometre walk around the city walls, then in the surrounding area among woods and rivers, paved roads and unexpected waterfalls.
