The Ciucioi Garden

Atlas of Beauty /
Trails, Green
The garden of stone and sky. A hanging garden a few steps from the centre of Lavis, unique in its kind, where on a steep slope the romantic ‘vertical’ layout of a garden conceived in seven crags with a spiral ascent develops unexpectedly. A scenographic path, a strongly symbolic narration, which traces an unmistakable mark in the landscape. The mysteries of Tommaso Bortolotti's garden, known as ‘dei Ciucioi’, begin with its name, which perhaps derives from the local name of the titmouse or perhaps from the nearby customs house (Zum Zoll in German). A man of solid technical and scientific culture, Bortolotti was also a visionary dreamer. He dedicated his entire life and every resource to the realisation of his garden, building admirable architecture and an underfloor heating system that allowed exotic and Mediterranean plants to grow, which today a twenty-year restoration is resurrecting.
